Getting Started with Phone Number Formatter

Last updated 3 weeks ago

Phone Number Formatter cleans, validates, and standardizes phone numbers directly inside your HubSpot workflows. Use it to automatically strip unwanted characters, add the correct country code, and output consistently formatted numbers across your entire CRM -- whether you need E.164 for integrations, national format for readability, or international format for global teams.

How It Works

  1. A HubSpot workflow reaches the Format Phone Number action for a record (contact, company, deal, or ticket)
  2. You select which phone number property to format and choose a country and output format
  3. The app strips spaces, dashes, parentheses, and other non-numeric characters from the number
  4. It detects whether a country code is already present, adds one if needed, and validates the length
  5. The formatted number and all format variants are returned so your workflow can store them on the record or branch based on the result

Key Capabilities

Multi-Country Support

Format phone numbers for 10 countries out of the box: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, Spain, Italy, Japan, and Brazil. The app knows the correct dial code and expected number length for each country.

Three Output Formats

Choose the format that fits your use case:

  • E.164 (e.g. +14155551234) -- the universal standard for APIs, telephony systems, and SMS tools
  • National (e.g. (415) 555-1234) -- the familiar local format your sales team recognizes
  • International (e.g. +1 415 555 1234) -- readable with country code for global audiences

Automatic Cleaning

The app removes all non-numeric characters -- spaces, dashes, dots, parentheses, and extension markers -- before formatting. Numbers that already include a country code are recognized and handled correctly.

Intelligent Country Detection

If a phone number already starts with a valid country code (e.g. +44), the app detects it automatically and uses the correct country rules, even if a different country was selected.

Length Validation

Formatted numbers are validated against the expected length for the chosen country. Numbers that are too short or too long are flagged, so you can branch your workflow to handle data quality issues.

Works Across Object Types

The workflow action is available for contacts, companies, deals, and tickets -- anywhere you store phone numbers in HubSpot.

Quick Start

  1. Install the app in your HubSpot portal (see the Installation Guide)
  2. Configure your default country code and leading-zero preferences on the Settings page
  3. Add the Format Phone Number action to a HubSpot workflow
  4. Test by enrolling a record and checking the formatted output
